Advocacy Strategies to Help your LEP Clients Navigate the Department of Social Services
This workshop is geared toward community advocates who assist limited English proficient individuals needing help from DSS such as child care subsidies, cash assistance, Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps), emergency housing and utility assistance. Presenters will review typical problem areas ranging from inadequate notices to the use of children as interpreters and discuss how we can help our LEP clients to obtain adequate information regarding their benefits, rights and responsibilities so they do not end up in a crisis situation.

Civil Rights Challenges to Law Enforcement Practices in Immigrant Communities How can we break down language and cultural barriers between law enforcement and immigrant communities? Successes and Challenges in our Local Courts and Beyond Whether trying to file for an Order of Protection, petitioning for child support or trying to prevent an eviction, LEP individuals face many challenges when dealing with our courts. This workshop will present the results of a clinical study regarding Limited English Proficient families with children on the autism spectrum and include discussion on how to improve the delivery of services and address these existing disparities.
